End of Days. Really?
Not so much in reference to the Mayan Calendar, but our tenure at the HappyBeing Studio in Heathmont has come to an end.
It is a day of mixed emotions for me. Over the last five years I've come to love this studio and its outlook over the nearby Dandenong Ranges. Morning practices brought a beautiful sense of peace, and evening summer practices often saw beautiful sunsets. On days when a more restorative practice was sought, we cocooned ourselves in and then went out into the world with a little more love in our hearts.
I feel blessed to have been able to teach in this space, but our journey has not ended, just changed. By embracing the change in our lives, sitting with it and feeling the good and the bad, we come to find acceptance.
In 2013, our new space is at the Central Ringwood Community Centre and after looking for months at various spaces available, I'm sure that our new home will be as welcoming as Heathmont was to us. For those of you that continue their journey with us, I want you to take the time to appreciate our new space. The trees, the birds, the murals outside the Community Centre. It is a different feel to the old studio, however the goal is the same: To go out into the world a little lighter, with more love in our hearts to go and serve ourselves and the community.
It feels like I took the Christmas tree down in our house only five minutes ago, and here we are again in December!
As we all start to speed up in the lead up to the holidays many of us feel overwhelmed by our to-do lists: organising presents, shopping, wrapping, tying up loose ends at work and attending end of year functions. Where did that spare 30 minutes go that I scheduled into the diary? You're not alone.
Before you start to stress out and move onto the next item on the to-do list. I have one event that I guarantee will provide you with the time out that you are seeking. Something just for you.
Join us Friday 7 December at 7pm-9pm at the HappyBeing studio for our last Nurture and Relax Workshop for 2012.
I look forward to seeing you there.
This week, HappyBeing welcomed Year 8 students from Ringwood Secondary College to our studio as part of the schools ‘Be Active’ program. The program aims to highlight the importance of physical and mental wellbeing. Our part has been to share the health benefits of yoga encouraging relaxation and centering techniques.
Kim Watson, Wellbeing Programs Coordinator, at Ringwood Secondary College said, “Not many 14 year olds have participated in a yoga class before, and many find little time to slow down. These classes have been taught in single sex groups and I believe it has offered them the opportunity to stop, reflect and provide a nice environment for the students to be themselves and experience the well referenced benefits of yoga practice.”
The students that participated in the 50-minute yoga practice were surprised by the physical strength that yoga poses demand and they experienced first-hand the relaxation benefits.
“It was hard work and intense, but also relaxing at the end. It was not what I was expecting,” said student, Callum Donovan.
Many of the other students agreed, citing that they didn't know yoga would be a challenge.
Yoga is not only a great form of exercise, in traditional yoga, it is also a tool that can help students find space. When life events start to mount up such as: exams, peer pressure, family issues – yoga gives students an outlet to positively move through their emotions by using relaxation techniques and mindfulness to calm the mind.
HappyBeing's founder Jannin Jacob, believes there is a gap in the way we currently educate our kids today. " Today children and young adults are taught to become better thinkers and this is supported by the constant advancement in technology, however they are displaying shorter attention spans and have little self-awareness. This is the downside of continually being bombarded with external stimuli. By introducing mindfulness and relaxation through yoga, we can help students with positive strategies as they move into higher levels of education and out into the world. "
On behalf of the HappyBeing staff, we'd like to thank all of the students that have come into our studio this week. You have been a delight and wish you every success in your journey ahead.
